Zoological Society of London (ZSL) – The Berbak Carbon Initiative

ZSL Idrisi land map

Description:
Through the Berbak Carbon Initiative (BCI), the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) seeks to enhance the protection and management of large tracts of Sumatran Tiger habitat. ZSL aims to achieve this through the generation of carbon credits through avoided deforestation and degradation and mitigating emissions from peat degradation and destruction. Forest Carbon has been advising on next steps and providing technical support for ZSL on the early development stages of the BCI since mid-2009. To date Forest Carbon has undertaken preliminary field work and completed a project feasibility study, established a GHG emission baseline, modeled future deforestation with IDRISI Land Change Modeler, and assessed future climatic benefits of the project.
