Forest Carbon has been engaged by Fauna and Flora International as the lead technical advisor to develop a community based REDD project in West Kalimantan that covers over 25,000 hectares of peat swamp forest which serves as habitat for orangutans and is a valuable local resource for communities. The forest is under threat from palm oil conversion and also strip mining.
For this project, Forest Carbon developed all land cover classification maps through satellite image analysis, conducted baseline emission modeling derived from tier 3 and tier two datasets, and the synthesis of the project design document for the Verified Carbon Standard. Forest Carbon also conducted an in depth legal analysis on village forest concessions in Indonesia, locally known as a Hutan Desa concession license. The analysis mapped out the concession authorization process to assist other communities in obtaining this concession type and also assessed the legality of developing a carbon project within this forest concession type.
Through the submission of a technical proposal on behalf of FFI to the Planet Action Foundation, the project obtained free high resolution satellite imagery for FFI saving the organization over $50,000 in project costs.
The project is funded though funds from the EU, the Ford Foundation, and the Foreign Commonwealth Organization of UK.
